Gardai are investigating the cause of a fire that raged in Killarney National Park overnight and was finally brought under control at around 6am this morning.

Fire crews battled overnight to control the flames that are thought to have started by burning gorse that got out of control.

The fire started in an area on the lower slope of Mangerton Mountain and quickly spread to an area encompassing about 100 acres as fire crews battled to bring it under control.

Units from Killarney, Castleisland, Kenmare and Killorglin attended the scene and six fire engines, jeeps and water tankers were all used.

The area is home to a significant amount of wildlife including red deer and native birds and other species.
