Families evacuated from homes in early hours after pipe bomb discovered in housing estate

Members of the Army’s bomb squad were forced to carry out a controlled explosion after a pipe bomb was discovered in a housing estate in the early hours of this morning.

Gardai were called after a suspect device was left at an address in Blackwater Court, Dundalk, Co Louth shortly before 1am.

Nine families were evacuated from their homes as officers sealed off the scene and the Defence Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit were requested.

The bomb squad were subsequently forced to carry out a controlled explosion of the suspected pipe bomb and residents eventually returned o their homes shortly after 6am.

The device - which has been described as viable - was placed outside the home of a man aged in his mid 20s, who is known to gardai.

Officers from Dundalk garda station are investigating the serious incident and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
