All homes and businesses left without electricity in Ireland this morning are expected to be restored by early evening, the network operator said.

At one stage 6,000 properties were in darkness last night as stormy weather lashed the country but the number has diminished as engineers fixed damaged power lines on Christmas Eve.

Storm Eva caused power cuts across the country, with Baltrasna in Co Meath and Ballymun in Dublin among the hardest hit.

There were also smaller outages in Enniscorthy in Co Wexford, Fermoy in Co Cork, and Ardfinnan near Clonmel in Tipperary.

Some ferry sailings between Dublin and Hollyhead were cancelled.

ESB Network crews worked through the night to repair power lines.

Two Irish Ferries sailings from Dublin to Holyhead have been cancelled and a third delayed due to bad weather on the Irish Sea.
