Elderly woman (83) mugged in south Dublin 'had just €3 in her bag'
Two women were mugged on the same night but gardaí do not believe the incidents are connected
Gardai are appealing for witnesses after two elderly women were mugged in south Dublin on the same night.
The first incident occurred just after 5.30pm on Friday, November 10 in the unlit car park of Mount Merrion Community Centre.
The woman (83) had been attending a movie screening in the community centre with the Mount Merrion Active Retired Association.
As she opened her car door, was approached by a lone male on a bicycle wearing a hood. He appeared to be in his late teens or early 20s.
Her daughter told Independent.ie that her mother was unaware that the male had approached her until she heard the words "give me your bag".
She said the young male put his hands on her bag and repeated the words again as he grabbed it from her. The woman offered no resistance and didn't suffer any injuries.
"She was a bit shaken but it all happened so fast that she didn't have time to register what had happened," her daughter said.
"She didn't have much in her bag as she'd just been shopping... just €3 in coins and an old mobile phone. She had two bank cards which my brother cancelled immediately.
"Her bag wouldn't have been much use to anyone."
Gardaí in Blackrock are investigating the incident and are appealing for witnesses.
Meanwhile, gardaí in Irishtown in Dublin are appealing for witnesses following the attempted robbery of the woman in her 70s in Sandymount.
The incident occurred at a bus stop on Newgrove Avenue shortly before 7pm on the same night.
"The woman was approached by a lone male (perhaps early 20s) who, following a struggle to get her handbag, made off with nothing," a garda spokesman said.
"The woman managed to hold onto her bag but sustained a number of injuries and was taken to St Vincents Hospital for treatment. Her injuries are not life threatening."
Gardaí do not believe at this stage the incidents are connected. It is understood that the description of the men do not match.
