An elderly man has died in a house fire in Cork.

The blaze, in a property at Old Friary Place off Shandon Street in Cork city, was detected early this morning by neighbours.

The alarm was raised and Cork Fire Brigade units were at the scene within minutes at 11.30am.

Units from Angelsea Street and Ballyvolane had the blaze under control a short time later.

A man in his early 70s was later found unresponsive inside the property.

The person is understood to have been pronounced dead at the scene before they could be rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

Gardaí have sealed off the scene to allow for a full technical and forensic investigation.

However, the initial indications are that the blaze was accidental.
