A driving instructor has been arrested by gardaí investigating multiple allegations of rape against a female.

It has been claimed that the attacks happened over a period of well over a decade.

The suspect was arrested at his Dublin home at 8.15am yesterday and brought to Tallaght Garda Station where he was still being questioned last night.

Yesterday morning's arrest followed a lengthy investigation after officers first received a complaint about the case in April of last year.

Since that time, it is understood gardaí have taken a number of statements from the alleged victim - who is known to the arrested man.

Abuse

It is believed that the victim has claimed that she was raped and sexually abused by the man from when she was a child.

It is understood that she also alleges that the abuse continued when she was an adult.

The shocking assaults to are alleged to have happened on a frequent basis in a house in Dublin.

The suspect in the case was not previously known to gardai and has no previous criminal convictions.

It is understood that he is well-known in the locality because of his job as a driving instructor.

A file on the case is expected to be prepared for the DPP.
