Dragon's Den star raises €273k for the homeless from sale of home
Dragon's Den star Barry O'Sullivan has raised €273,000 for homeless families from the sale of his holiday house on the Aran Islands.
The Silicon Valley entrepreneur offered the proceeds from the sale of the six-bedroom house overlooking Inis Mór's Kilmurvey beach as part of a new campaign by Focus Ireland and COPE Galway to get "high net-worth individuals" to help with the homelessness crisis.
The 'Home from Home' initiative allows both homeless charities to buy and refurbish homes for the homeless.
CEO of COPE Galway, Jacquie Horan, says the proceeds of this sale will go towards the purchase of much-needed houses for people currently homeless in Galway.
"Every €20,000 of the proceeds will be used as leverage to buy another home. On one night in Galway, November 21, there were 35 families, with 93 children living in emergency accommodation so this is a wonderful opportunity to provide badly needed housing for these families."
Jacquie thanked Barry and his family for the generous gesture and she called on others who may be able to make a similar gesture: "Anyone wishing to donate to the "Home from Home" campaign should contact us at www.copegalway.ie or www.focusireland.ie".
