Dead baby found in family bathroom
GARDAI are treating as "a personal tragedy" the discovery of a dead newborn baby in the bathroom of a family home.
Gardai and Health Service Executive (HSE) officials are liaising over the tragic discovery in a house in south Munster.
Paramedics and gardai were called to the house yesterday morning where they discovered a woman in her early 20s in a very distressed state and a newborn baby lying in the bathroom of the family home.
The woman had apparently attempted to give birth on her own in the bathroom.
Paramedics immediately began cardiac pulmonary resuscitation but the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.
The body has since been removed to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where a full post mortem examination will take place. The young woman was also taken to hospital where she is undergoing medical assessment.
A garda source indicated that the baby was that of a near-full term girl. However, it is unclear whether she was stillborn or died shortly after being delivered. The woman's parents are not understood to have known that the girl was giving birth in the house.
"The nature of our inquiry will be determined by the results of the post-mortem examination," the garda source said.
Gardai are liaising with the HSE over the matter and full counselling services will be offered to the young woman.
