John McGonagle (37) was the third person to die on Donegal's roads in less than a week.
He died when his Ford Mondeo car struck a ditch at Clar, near Redcastle, on the Inishowen peninsula around 11.30pm on Sunday.
The road was closed yesterday while garda forensic experts examined the scene.
Mr McGonagle, who was married with three young daughters, was found dead inside his car which was jammed into a ditch.
He was a champion stock car racer, having won the championship at a local club in Burnfoot at the weekend.
"John was a brilliant guy. He was so proud of his three wee girls and I can't start to think about what a loss he is," said one racing friend.
"He was one of life's true gentlemen," he added.
The 37-year-old was the third person to die on Donegal's roads in less than a week.
Last Wednesday, a 34-year-old man was killed when his motorcycle crashed into an SUV towing a trailer on the outskirts of Raphoe.
