Cyclist airlifted to hospital in critical condition after road crash
A cyclist is fighting for life in hospital after suffering serious injuries in a road crash.
The incident took place at approximately 4.45pm on Sunday near Ballina, Co Mayo.
Gardaí say a 54-year-old male cyclist and a car were in collision on the R134 at Rathroeen.
Paramedics attended the scene but the victim's injuries were so serious that a decision was taken to transfer him by helicopter to hospital.
The cyclist was eventually brought to Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar.
In a statement gardaí described his injuries as "critical".
The scene was attended and fully examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
Both the cyclist and the driver of the vehicle involved were travelling in the same direction, towards Killala, at the time of the collission.
Investigations are continuing.
