Convicted drug dealer died after collapsing in Mountjoy cell

A prisoner, convicted of drugs offences, was found in his cell this morning at Mountjoy Prison.

The man, in his early 30s, was found by officials early this morning, Independent.ie has confirmed.

He was rushed to the Mater Hospital after he was discovered unconscious in his cell this morning.

The National Prison Service and An Garda Siochana are both investigating.

He is believed to have had a problem with addiction from an early age.

A source confirmed to Independent.ie that the cause of death is believed to be related to drugs.

"The Irish Prison Service and An Garda Siocana are currently investigating it," a spokesperson for The Irish Prison Service told Independent.ie.

He was serving a sentence for drug offences.

Gardai confirmed: "We are aware that there was some incident in Mountjoy. A man was taken to the Mater and he collapsed in his cell. It looks like sudden death."
