A controversial gym connected to the Kinahan crime cartel has confirmed it is rebranding following “lengthy discussions” with a major casino of the same name.

Macklin’s Gym Marbella (MGM), which is based in Spain, was founded by former Irish, British and European Middleweight champion Matthew Macklin, who is not involved in crime.

The successful gym, which has signed boxers like Olympian Paddy Barnes and BJ Saunders, released a statement today confirming that it had changed its name.

Writing on their official Facebook page the gym said it would now be known as MTK , short for ‘Mack The Knife’.

The statement continued: “After lengthy discussions with the MGM Casino and Resort Group in Las Vegas, the decision has been made to change the brand name from 'Macklin's Gym Marbella' to 'Mack The Knife', this will, therefore, eliminate any confusion between the two entities moving forward.”

Last September the gym in Marbella was searched by Guardia Civil and and visiting gardaí as part of a major international crackdown on the Kinahan gang.

Mobster Daniel Kinahan, a son of international drug trafficker Christy Kinahan, is heavily involved in the running of the Spanish facility.

The Kinahan gang, run by Daniel’s father Christy, have been embroiled in a bloody gangland feud with the rival Hutch faction which has already claimed 11 lives.

In today's statement the MGM gym claims it has “grown from strength to strength”.

The post continued: “The opportunity to re-brand is one that will lead to a more distinct presence within the sport globally. The new 'Mack The Knife' branding remains loyal to the original and the logo which is synonymous with Macklin's Gym Marbella will be predominantly the same.

“'Mack The Knife' was the alias Matthew Macklin used during his time as a professional and we believe this will represent the brand well in the future.”

Macklin himself is quoted as saying: “MGM has been brilliant for the last four years, it's the same people, the same company and will continue to go from strength to strength under MTK. We are looking forward to the future and we will continue to keep expanding, it's a very exciting time."
