The Coastguard has aided in the rescue of 11 people after a Spanish trawler started taking on water last night.

The Coastguard at Valentia received a distress call last night at approximately 9pm last night from a Spanish registered fishing vessel.

The Novo Jundina sent a mayday distress signal that it was taking on water and requested immediate evacuation.

Details of the vessel's location, which was about 40 nautical miles north west of La Coruña, were passed to the Spanish Coastguard which led the rescue of the men.

Spanish Helicopter Helimer 401 and rescue boat Salvamar Shaula were tasked and 11 crew were airlifted from the vessel.
