A man has been hospitalised following a mass brawl at a kickboxing event at the weekend.

Gardaí are investigating the incident which saw chairs and bottles being used as weapons.

The violence erupted at the Oakwood Hotel in Shannon, Co Clare, at around 11pm on Saturday.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

It is understood the kickboxing event has been held annually at the hotel for the last number of years without incident.

More than a dozen people got directly involved in the brawl in front of shocked punters.

A number of bouts had to be cancelled after spectators began attacking one another in the crowded function room of the hotel.

Footage of the brawl shows chairs and bottles being thrown at people.

One man can be seen attacking a bystander attempting to stop the fighting, hitting him with a punch from behind.

A young boy can also be seen running away as a group of men and a woman get involved in the melee.

A woman is also shown throwing a chair across the packed function room.

Gardaí confirmed they were investigating the incident but no arrests had yet been made.

Local gardaí responded to the scene after receiving reports of a large-scale public order incident at the hotel.

The injuries of the man who was hospitalised are not believed to be serious.

"There were no arrests on the night but the investigation is ongoing. We are looking at CCTV and other footage of this incident as part of this investigation," a Garda spokesman confirmed.

"One person was taken to hospital for treatment."

The Oakwood Hotel declined to comment.
