A pedestrian was rushed to hospital after he was knocked down on a busy bridge early this morning.

The male was walking on Quincentennial Bridge in Galway city shortly after 6.30am when he was struck by a car.

He was brought by ambulance to University Hospital Galway with serious injuries.

The bridge over Lough Corrib was closed off for a period to allow garda forensic investigators examine the scene. Heavy traffic delays were experienced in the area as a result.

The bridge has since reo-opened.
