Army bomb disposal experts are examining a car that caught fire on a main road in Northern Ireland.

The female driver of the vehicle escaped injury in the incident, which happened around 8.30am on the A2 between Belfast and Bangor at around 8.30am on Tuesday.

The bomb disposal team is assisting police in their efforts to establish the cause of the blaze amid claims from some public representatives that it may have been an explosive device.

It is understood that the Army experts have not yet confirmed whether that was the case.

Police sources said the woman who was driving the car is not a serving officer.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) spokesman said: "Police are currently working to establish the circumstances of how a car caught fire on the A2 between Belfast and Bangor this morning, Tuesday 6th March.

"The main A2 remains closed at this time while the investigation into the circumstances of the incident continue."
