The body of a missing hillwaker has been found in the Derryveagh Mountains.

A spokesperson for Malin Head Coast Guard confirmed that the man's body was found by members of the Rescue 118 helicopter team after a major search operation on Sunday.

The man had been last seen on Thursday when he set out on his hike. He had told friends that he had planned to trek through the Sliabh Sneachta area.

The alarm was raised on Saturday when it was noticed that he had failed to return to his car, which was found parked at Loch Barra on the western outskirts of Glenveagh National Park.

It's understood that the man was an experienced hillwalker from England but had been living in Donegal.

The search operation was carried out by members of Donegal Mountain Rescue, Sligo-Leitrim Mountain Rescue, North West Mountain Rescue and the Rescue 118 helicopter.
