Three men have been hailed as heroes after the capture of a raider following the burglary of a Post Office earlier today.

A lone thief entered the shop in Mullinavat, Co Kilkenny at approximately 12.30pm with what was believed to be a firearm and left the scene with a sum of money.

Local man Billy Walsh was a witness to the burglary and immediately reacted when the man, aged in his mid 20s, began to leave the scene.

"I just ran straight away out the door and roared at your man. As soon as I roared at him, he made a run for it," he told RTE's Nine O'clock News.

Billy's son Liam Walsh was sitting in his van outside the post office with a third man, Fergal Tynan, when he saw the raider fleeing.

"I tore off in the van after him. I had another guy with me and we just jumped out and just held him there until the gardai came."

The man was then arrested and brought to Thomastown Garda Station where he is still being questioned.

"I never seen someone so casual after robbing someone, just tipping along," Liam said. "I've never seen anything like it."

Gardaí are appealing for witness to contact Mullinavat Station on 051898122, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
