Kathy Armstrong

Alcohol and cigarettes worth €3,800 were seized by Revenue officers in the early hours of Saturday morning.

During a routine check of a van at Dublin Port, officers discovered 355 litres of alcohol (wine and beer) and 3,200 cigarettes branded Winston, Ken and Pall Mall.

The vehicle had travelled from Romania via Holyhead and had arrived in Ireland just before midnight on Friday.

The male driver and his two passengers, who are all Romanian nationals aged in their 30s, were questioned about the discovery and investigations are ongoing.

Revenue reports that the smuggled goods have a retail value of over €3,800 and represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of around €2,800.

Anyone with any information about the smuggling or sale of illegal alcohol or tobacco are urged to contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295.
