New secretary general at Dept of Environment

THE Government has appointed John McCarthy as secretary general of the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government.

Mr McCarthy is currently assistant secretary responsible for the local government division, and has led the ongoing programme of local government reform.

He served as assistant secretary for the past six years, and has been a civil servant for the last 20 years, previously holding posts in the Department of Social Protection and the Department of Finance.
