New scare for DJ as blood clots found in his brain
Mr Carey was released from hospital within days.
However, medics have been keeping a close eye on the sportsman's health ever since.
It is understood the blood clots were noticed while he was undergoing other tests investigating his health problems.
Blood clots that block blood flow are the main culprits in most heart attacks and strokes -- and they can damage other organs.
Clot removal is a procedure in which doctors use miniature tools to break up or remove a blood clot that is blocking a blood vessel in the brain.
The hurling legend looked to be in high spirits last week, however, as he told pals he had recovered from the operation.
"He is in super form, he looks really well and it's great to see the old DJ back," said a source close to Mr Carey who met the star last week.
Mr Carey's former wife, Christine Preston, and his two children, Sean and Mike, were at his bedside in hospital in April.
It's understood that they have been a source of support to him as he recovered from his latest scare.
Mr Carey, who is from Gowran in Kilkenny, where his parents still live, has told friends he has "no contact" with his parents or his former fiancee.
The businessman has suffered major blows on financial and personal fronts -- and his family is bitterly divided since Ms Newman called in auditors over irregularities at the couple's business.
The firm wrote off €200,000 after a series of discrepancies were found by auditors.
The mystery transactions are the subject of a garda investigation. However, no prosecutions have been taken to date.
Ms Newman became a director of DJ Carey Enterprises in 2009 and ran the business along with Mr Carey after his sister Catriona stepped down as a director.
Mr Carey and Ms Newman were together for nine years and had a portfolio of properties including a Georgian house in Monkstown and houses at the K Club and Mount Juliet.
Ms Newman spoke publicly about her split from Mr Carey during a radio interview last month when she said she had "no idea" how his health was.
"I've had a pretty rough time over the past year professionally and personally," she said at the time.
The entrepreneur also indicated it was Mr Carey who called time on their relationship, stating: "DJ decided to separate from me and he moved on with his life."
Meanwhile, Ms Newman and Mr Carey had judgments for more than €9m against them last year in favour of AIB Mortgage Bank.
