MEET Upali -- Dublin Zoo's latest arrival. The 17-year-old Asian bull elephant, above left, weighs more than 6,000kg -- roughly the weight of 10 regular Irish farm cows.

The three-metre tall bachelor is proving quite an attraction for the three breeding female elephants at the Phoenix Park site. Upali arrived from Chester Zoo at midnight last Thursday and he's been strutting his stuff along the sandy plains of the Kaziranga Forest Trail enclosure.

He joins Bernhardine, who is 25 and arrived in October 2006; Yasmin, her 19-year-old sister; Anak, Yasmin's eight-year-old calf; and Asha (5), the first elephant born in Ireland.

Ciaran McMahon, who oversees the elephants, said it was a significant day. "Upali's arrival is something that has been planned for many, many years here at Dublin Zoo," he said.
