INTEL's decision to build a new factory at its existing plant in Leixlip, Co Kildare, could create 1,000 new jobs here, writes Thomas Molloy.
The plant will create 500 new jobs and allow the company to bring back a further 500 staff currently working in the US, it emerged yesterday.
Intel chief executive Paul Otellini told staff in the US earlier this month that the company plans to build a new super-thin microchip in Ireland.
There was further good news in the technology sector yesterday as US-based MSD said it planned to invest €7m in its Carlow factory, creating a further 20 jobs.
MSD has already invested €220m in Carlow and employs 146 people there. It employs 2,300 people in Ireland in Cork, Dublin, Wicklow, Tipperary and Carlow.
