New gardai to be recruited after pay deal
JUSTICE Minister Alan Shatter has promised that the recruitment of new gardai will begin soon as a result of the new public-sector pay deal, writes Michael Brennan.
He had put the recruitment on hold after Garda bodies rejected the Croke Park II deal but they have now recommended acceptance of the new Haddington Road pay deal.
Mr Shatter said that the new deal would deliver the "crucial savings" in the Garda budget that were necessary.
"Work is moving forward with a view to commencing a recruitment campaign," he said.
There are currently 13,400 members in the force but Garda bodies have warned that it will drop below 13,000 if recruitment does not begin soon.
