A young garda has proudly followed in his late father's footsteps.

When he was a child, Kenneth Lawton was photographed, by Mark Condren, in the square in Boherbue, Co Cork, alongside his father, who was a garda.

There were mixed emotions yesterday as Garda Kenneth Lawton marked his passing-out parade at the Garda College in Templemore. It is now six months since his father, retired Garda James 'Jim' Lawton, lost a courageous battle with cancer.

Condren, who is now a staff photographer for the Irish Independent, was again there to capture the moment, 20 years after taking the first photograph.

Kenneth's father Jim was one of the best known and most respected officers in the southern division, serving for many years in the Boherbue area.

He was thrilled that his son had decided to pursue a career in An Garda Síochána. Yesterday, watched by his mother Rena and sister Clíona, Kenneth proudly donned the uniform his father wore with such distinction.
