New car sales fall by 10pc in a month

NEW-car sales fell 10pc last month while those for the year to date are down 12pc.

Just 2,487 new cars were sold in September, down from 2,767 for the corresponding month in 2012.

So far this year, 76,630 new cars were sold, down 12pc on this time last year (87,163).

City of Tribes tops recycling league

GALWAY has the greenest and keenest recyclers, according to a survey revealing Irish householders recycled more than 250 million bottles, jars and cans so far this year.

The City of Tribes recycled 57 bottles for every man, woman and child in the city.

They were closely followed by Waterford city, where an average of 50 pieces of glass per person were recycled, according to new figures from Rehab Glassco.

Average recycling rates in Ireland went up from 58pc in 2011 to 65pc this year, making the country one of the best in Europe.

African lawyer joins police board

A solicitor from the Democratic Republic of Congo has joined the Dublin City Joint Policing Committee.

Zephyrin Ngaliema Mukoko, who came here in 2006, works for the Integration Centre and will represent the migrant community on the committee.

The Integration Centre was selected from six organisations, which applied when the representative positions were advertised.
