New bypass will be a boon to truck drivers

BOTTLENECK blues are about to be banished in a western town.

Diggers and bulldozers are to begin work on the €59m bypass of Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, on Monday -- three days after Transport Minister Leo Varadkar turned the sod on the belated project.

Hauliers to and from the west and northwest on the N5 route will welcome the road because the former market town, with its frequently clogged Flannery's Corner, often proved a nightmare for big trucks to negotiate.

The project has been the objective of Roscommon County Development Plans since 1993 but never got the go-ahead for take-off as so many other projects around the country were on the launch pad.
