Neighbours described shock as man (46) stabbed to death in 'quiet residential area'

A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a man (46) in Carlow town this afternoon.

Gardai were called to a house on Frederick Avenue after a report of a man being stabbed at around 1.30pm.

Gardai found the man seriously injured and he was later pronounced dead.

The man in his 20s was arrested a short time later. He is currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Carlow Garda Station.

A family member of the deceased man visited the scene this evening, and neighbours expressed their shock, describing the area as a quiet estate with a mixture of families and older people.

One shocked resident arrived home from work to discover the crime scene.

The scene remains preserved for a technical examination ,and a garda forensic team is due arrive this evening. The State Pathologist has also been notified.

It is understood senior officers will then decide whether the incident should be upgraded to a murder inquiry.
