Neighbours battle flames but fail to save elderly man from fatal blaze

A man has died in a house fire in Connemara.

The man, who was in his 70s died in the blaze which broke out at his home in Recess in Connemara, Co Galway.

The fire broke out at about 1.30pm today and was noticed by a neighbour.

Locals attempted to gain access to the house in a bid to rescue the elderly man but were beaten back by flames.

Fire Brigade units from from Clifden and Galway rushed to the scene but were unable to save the elderly victim.

It is understood that the man had lived alone at the house. His remains were brought to University College Hospital in Galway where a post mortem examination will be carried out.

GardaĆ­ in Clifden are investigating the cause of the fire.
