Investigations were under way last night into the death of a man who had been arrested by gardai, write Tom Brady and Michelle O'Keeffe.
Gardai used a pepper spray to restrain Mark Ward (32) who was found naked on a street in Dundalk.
He became unwell shortly afterwards and was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.
Mr Ward had been living with his family at Seafield Lawns in the town.
Gardai were alerted after he walked naked into a shop in the Green Acres area of Dundalk on Tuesday evening and picked up a greeting card and walked out. He was described as being in a distressed and agitated state.
Gardai have initiated an inquiry into his death and the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission has also begun a parallel investigation.
