MILITARY archivists are wondering just who is the mystery "trustworthy man" whose sepia-toned photograph arrived in the post.
Dressed in a uniform, he sits on a bench in what appears to be a military barracks, perhaps somewhere in Ireland.
The photo, along with a discharge paper dating from May 1920, arrived by post yesterday at the Defence Forces military archives office.
A spokesman said a slip of paper accompanying the mystery package said simply, "found on bus, return to owner".
The discharge paper predates the formation of the national army and refers to Cork and to infantry records with the words, "trustworthy man".
The soldier also appears to have been a sergeant. The archives can be contacted at www.militaryarchives.ie or firstname.lastname@example.org.
