Gardai are investigating after a 77-year-old man was punched in the face in an "horrific" road rage attack.

The man was driving near the Polestar roundabout in Letterkenny, Co Donegal when the incident occurred on Saturday evening.

The man was driving his car when another driver sounded the horn behind him.

According to reports the pensioner thought it was someone he knew and went to speak to the man in his car.

After realising they were strangers the pensioner returned to his car where he was pursued by the driver and attacked.

The other driver opened the pensioner's car and punched him in the face.

The pensioner was brought to Letterkenny General Hospital for treatment.

The pensioner's granddaughter who wishes to remain anonymous told Donegal Daily that she was "horrified" at the attack.

"I just cannot understand how a human being could do this to someone. My grandfather has been left stunned by this. Nobody deserves what happened to him.

"He went to hospital and they initially thought that he had broken his jaw. Thankfully it was not broken but he is badly bruised all around his mouth and hasn’t eaten since last Saturday," she told the Donegal Daily.

According to gardai, CCTV is being sought to establish the identity of the suspected offender.

Gardaí at Letterkenny are appealing for assistance from any passing motorist that may have witnessed the incident to contact them at Letterkenny Station on 074 9167100.
