A man has been charged over offensive comments allegedly posted on a social networking site about the murder of police officer Ronan Kerr in Northern Ireland.

Constable Kerr, 25, was killed when a dissident republican bomb exploded as he got into his car at his home in Omagh, Co Tyrone, on April 2.

A man, 45, was arrested in Cookstown, Co Tyrone, on Wednesday and charged with distributing material that was threatening or offensive.

He is to appear at Dungannon Magistrates' Court on July 22 charged under the Malicious Communications Act.

A condition of the police bail is that he is not allowed to use a computer.
