Murder accused in hospital

A MAN who is charged with the murders of a mother, her two children and another woman is being treated at the Central Mental Hospital.

John Geary (31) did not appear at Newcastle West court in Limerick yesterday after he was charged with the murders of his daughter, Amy (five months), his ex-partner, Sarah Hines (25), her son Reece (3) and Alicia Brough (20).

The two women and two children were murdered at 18 Hazelgrove, Gortboy, Newcastle West on November 15.

Judge Mary O'Halloran noted that the accused man was not at yesterday's sitting and is an inpatient at the Central Mental Hospital in Dublin.

Insp Eamon O'Neill asked that the defendant be remanded in custody until the next hearing of the case on December 10. There was no objection to the State application from defence solicitor, John Herbert. A number of onlookers had gathered outside the courthouse while the brief hearing proceeded inside.

The funerals of all four victims, who were stabbed to death, took place earlier this week.
