Ó Murchú : I won't take any salary if I'm president

INDEPENDENT.IE REPORTERS

PRESIDENTIAL hopeful Labhrás Ó Murchú will not take the €250,000 salary if he is elected as president.

Speaking on RTE's Today with Pat Kenny this morning, the Fianna Fáil senator said "I would work for nothing. I would be honoured to serve... I don't necessarily need the money, I lead a relatively frugal life."

He said he had made this decision before Martin McGuinness announced at the weekend that he would only take the average industrial wage of around €35,000 if he was elected.

Mr Ó Murchú also said he will have the required support of 20 Oireacthas members to stand if Fianna Fail allows a free vote.

He denied that he was homophobic and said he was in favour of civil partnerships for gay people.

"I'm not anti gay," he said. "I have never made an anti-gay comment. I believe the gay community have been badly treated in Ireland."
