Mum's lucky escape after 4X4 ploughs into car while she helps crash victim

Stephen Dunne

A YOUNG mother of two watched in horror as a 4x4 vehicle ploughed through her hedge and smashed into her stationary car.

The accident happened just minutes after another crash on the same stretch of road -- one of Co Wicklow's most notorious bad bends.

Locals said the section of road between Glenealy and Rathdrum had been the scene of at least six other crashes since January.

They are calling on Wicklow County Council to take action.

Esther Doyle, from Ballydowling, near Glenealy, was getting ready to leave for work at 8am yesterday when she heard a loud skid across the road.

She found a car in the entrance to a wooded area after the driver had apparently lost control on the bend. Ms Doyle dashed home to get the man a cup of tea.

Just minutes later, while she was standing across the road, the 4x4 ploughed through her ditch to land on top of her car.

"I just heard this skid and looked around to see the 4x4 career off the road and into my front yard," Ms Doyle said yesterday.

"I ran over and the driver was trying to get out to see if anyone was in my car, which he had landed on."

She added: "Luckily, there was no one in it but ordinarily I would have been going to work at that time and myself or my kids could have been in the car."
