THE mother of former All-Star hurler Derek Hardiman was killed early yesterday in a single-car accident near her home.

Mother-of-nine Ena Hardiman (55), of Kiltormer, Co Galway, died after the car she was driving hit a wall at New Gate on the Kiltormer to Portumna road between 7.30am and 8am yesterday.

Mrs Hardiman, a widow, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident has shocked the local community, especially members of the local Mullagh GAA club where her eight sons, aged between 18 and 32, all played hurling.

Among them is former Galway Senior hurling All-Star Derek Hardiman (31), who played in the 2005 All-Ireland final between Galway and Cork.

She was a very devoted GAA supporter who went to all of her sons' matches.
