A MOTHER who failed to send her 13-year-old son to school has been jailed for a month.
Jailing the woman at Tallaght District Court, Judge Anthony Halpin said she was "criminally irresponsible" by not ensuring her son attend a special school.
The judge told the court that the law is not strong enough in school-attendance cases and called for a minimum sentence of 12 months' imprisonment.
The court heard that the boy would be picked up by bus every day to go to a special school in Cabra, but on some days the bus driver would call to the house and there would be no answer.
The court heard that since a school-attendance notice was issued, the boy had missed 129 out of 273 days.
