THE mother of Dean Fitzpatrick was taken ill last night and was not able to attend her son's funeral.

The tragic father of one died after being stabbed last Saturday week.

His mother's partner Dave Mahon has admitted to the stabbing but claims he acted in self-defence.

Around 200 mourners gathered at the Holy Trinity Church in Donaghmede to pay a final farewell to the 23 year old.

His partner Sarah O'Rourke and young son Leon, who is nearly two, were present, together with Dean's father, Christopher, aunt Christine and extended family and friends.

Parish priest Fr Eoin McCrystal told mourners that Dean's mother, Audrey, was unfortunately taken ill last night and so was unable to be present.

He said Dean was a young man with so much of his life ahead of him.

He had been a proud father to Leon and had doted on him.

"Dean was a young man with plenty of life in him so it is only natural that there are so many broken hearts in this church this morning," he commented.

Symbols representing Dean's life and passions were brought up to the altar at the start of the mass. They included a baseball hat representing his love of fashion, headphones for his love of music and a miniature bicycle for his love of cycling.

Friends offered prayers for Dean, in thanks for his life, his sense of humour, his strength, courage and dignity. A prayer was also said for Amy and for all missing people.

The funeral arrangements were made by Dean's partner, Sarah O'Rourke (28) under the orders of President of the High Court Nicholas Kearns, after legal proceedings were taken by Dean's father, Christopher seeking that his wishes and those of Ms O Rourke be respected regarding the burial.
