Mum and daughter die in crash

A TEENAGE girl and her mother were killed yesterday in a road crash in Co Mayo, the first fatalities of the bank holiday weekend.

The incident occurred before midday yesterday just outside Ballina on the Sligo road. The deaths came as motorists were urged to drive with care over the weekend.

Gardai in Ballina are investigating the single-vehicle crash, which occurred at Knockbrendan, Quay Road, Ballina, at 11.50am yesterday.

The mother, 39, and daughter, 15, both from Poland, were among five people travelling in the car.

They were killed when the car lost control and left the road.

The male driver and two other passengers, a male and female, were taken to Mayo General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Ballina gardai have appealed for witnesses to contact them on 096 20560.

Elsewhere, a 64-year-old woman was killed at about 1.30pm yesterday when she was struck by a car while walking on the main Waterford to Dungarvan Road. Gardai in Dungarvan, Co Waterford, are investigating.

The woman was removed to Waterford Regional Hospital, where she was later declared dead.
