Mugging accused kept in custody

FURTHER charges may be brought against a man alleged to have mugged an 86-year-old woman, who subsequently died. Mariusz Chelstowski (35) is accused of robbing the late Mary Nolan of €200 on September 7 in Kilkenny.

Judge Eamon O'Brien yesterday remanded Mr Chelstowski in custody to Wheatfield Prison to appear before Kilkenny District Court on October 25 as gardai await direction from the DPP. Ms Nolan died at St Luke's Hospital on September 15. She had remained in hospital ever since the incident in July.

Racketeers dump sludge on road

CROSS-BORDER fuel smuggling racketeers struck within days of a Revenue swoop on two illegal diesel laundering plants.

The racketeers dumped several thousand litres of toxic sludge yesterday on a roadway at Tobermannan Bridge in South Monaghan. It came after swoops on plants near Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, and Muff, Co Louth, on Monday.

Caretaker wins €19,000 door claim

A SCHOOL caretaker who broke an index finger at work has been awarded €19,000 damages.

Colm Hennessy, counsel for Robert Shakeshaft (63), told Dublin Circuit Civil Court that a defective automatic door closer had been responsible for the accident at Rush National School, Co Dublin, in June 2009.
