Move over Patrick – Claires set name record
A NEW Irish record for the largest gathering in one place of people with the same first name has been created – although it fell short of the world record organisers had hoped to set.
People with the name Claire, Clair or Clare were asked to gather in Ennis, Co Clare, in an effort to beat the world record set by 1,096 Mohammeds in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in 2005.
The event was part of 'The Gathering' initiative and a number of people travelled to Ireland from Australia and the US – creating an Irish record with 296 suitably named people turning up.
Event organiser Sharon Meaney said: "It was a brilliant day and there was an incredible buzz.
"It's disappointing we didn't beat the world record but we have beaten the previous Irish record."
The previous Irish record was set in Donegal in March when 276 people with the name Patrick or Patricia got together.
