Mourners say a final farewell to oldest man
AT 106, he was the country's oldest man.
Yesterday the life and times of Paddy Gleeson were remembered in a simple funeral service as he was laid to rest.
Incredibly, his mother died almost 100 years before him. His father emigrated in 1916, and Paddy never saw him again.
Paddy, who celebrated his 106th birthday in May, was laid to rest following funeral mass at St Patrick's Church in O'Callaghan' s Mills, Co Clare yesterday. He had passed away peacefully at Raheen Community Hospital in Tuamgraney on Saturday night.
Paddy's nephew, Noel Hickey, addressed the congregation and thanked all those who had taken part in the ceremony.
A lifelong teetotaller and bachelor, Paddy said in an interview earlier this year: "The secret is this. I was nice to everyone and then everyone was nice to me." That line also featured in the poem read from the altar during yesterday's ceremony.
