A motorist has been killed in a single-vehicle crash on the N2 in the early hours of the morning.

According to gardai, a man in his 30s was fatally injured when the car he was driving left the road south of Ardee at Mullacapple at approximately 1am this morning.

It is understood the car collided with a pole.

The man, the sole occupant of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

A section of the N2 is closed while it is examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Local diversions are in place.
