Motor sports dream stalls on start line
It was the adventure of a lifetime and one motorsports journalist, Sean Moriarty from Tralee (inset), could hardly believe he was selected to experience it.
On New Year's Day Sean, acting as a co-driver alongside British rally enthusiast Chris Butcher, crossed the starting line at the Houses of Parliament in Westminster destined for Capetown.
The mammoth challenge would have seen Sean cross three continents with the aim of reaching the South African city on January 29.
But after just five hours, disaster struck, when Sean's car was involved in a collision with a competitor.
"It was completely devastating" said Sean this week.
Sean admits he thinks about what might have been.
He said: "Sometimes I do stop and wonder where the drivers are now."
