Mother-of-two dies after being hit by van

A MOTHER-OF-TWO was killed in a collision less than 100 yards from her home while taking an early morning walk before getting her children ready for school, writes Mark O'Regan.

Collette Sweeney (39), pictured, from Belmullet, Co Mayo, had left her home shortly before 7am and was walking along a narrow country road.

She was killed in a collision with a transit van which attempted to swerve out of the way but was unable to avoid her.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, and her body was removed to Mayo General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The driver of the vehicle was uninjured.

Ms Sweeney, who was born and reared in Belmullet, was a full-time carer to her disabled son Shane (10) and regularly travelled with him to Dublin for medical appointments at Crumlin Hospital.

Any witnesses to the collision are asked to contact Belmullet gardai at 097 81910.
