Mother of two is stabbed to death in daylight attack

A MOTHER OF TWO in her mid-40s was knifed to death in a brutal attack on a roadway in Roscommon town yesterday afternoon.

The woman, named locally as Ann Henry, was stabbed outside a house in the Spinny area of the town near the Abbey Hotel shortly after 2.30pm.

A local man in his mid-20s was arrested at the scene shortly afterwards by Roscommon gardai.

Mrs Henry, a mother of two sons, was pronounced dead by the emergency services who were called to the incident. The dead woman’s husband is local school principal Phelim Henry, who teaches at Clontuskert National School, Ballyleague, Co Roscommon.

Local people said that there was widespread shock in the area at the killing and described Mrs Henry and her husband as being highly respected members of the local community.

The man arrested by gardai was taken to Roscommon garda station and is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The State Pathologist was expected at the scene later. The body was removed to Ballinasloe hospital for a post-mortem examination to take place today. Gardai cordoned off the area and began their house-to-house inquiries. A forensic team was also due to attend the murder scene.
