Mother and daughter die in flat blaze

A mother and daughter have died in a fire in Northern Ireland.

A flat at Dunlea Vale, Dungannon, Co Tyrone, was engulfed in flames after 10pm on Saturday.

The victims were Deirdre McGirr (38) and Elizabeth McGirr (71), police said. A man aged in his 30s escaped injury.

Police are investigating the circumstances.

SDLP chair of the party's Dungannon branch, Denise Fox, expressed sympathy for the family.

"This is a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to the family and friends of the two women who lost their lives in this blaze," she said.

"There is an overwhelming sense of sadness in Dungannon at this news and the thoughts of the community are with those close to the deceased."
