Mortar attack on RUC station
RENEGADE republicans were being blamed last night for a mortar bomb attack on a police station in Newry, Co Down. The station at Corry Square was formerly the main police and British army base in Newry but has largely been replaced by the new Ardmore complex outside of the town.
However, some police and soldiers were inside the base at the time of the attack. Nobody was hurt.
``This was a cold-blooded and utterly despicable attempt to murder members of the security forces,'' said Northern Ireland Political Development Minister Paul Murphy. ``Those who carried out the attack showed a clear and callous contempt for the safety of the people of Newry.''
