'More work needed' on pay reform
TANAISTE Eamon Gilmore has indicated the reform of the wage setting system for the low paid will go well beyond the Government's expert report into the area, writes Fionnan Sheahan.
Enterprise Minister Richard Bruton came under attack from Labour backbenchers when he came up with proposals to overhaul the Joint Labour Committee (JLC) system. The proposals included scrapping extra Sunday pay in the hospitality sector.
The minister was accused of coming up with proposals that went much further than what was contained in the report on the mechanisms. Since then, a High Court ruling that the JLC system was unconstitutional has increased the need for reform.
But Mr Gilmore said the expert report was not specific in some areas, leaving it up to the Government to decide.
